      IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ

The content presented in the Anti-Aging Therapeutics, volume 17 is for educational purposes only and is specifically designed for those with a health, medical, or biotechnological education or professional experience. Anti-Aging Therapeutics, volume 17 does not prevent, diagnose, treat or cure disease or illness.

While potentially therapeutic pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals (dietary supplementation) and interventive therapies are described in the A4M's Anti-Aging Therapeutics, volume 17, this work serves the sole purpose of functioning as an informational resource. Under no circumstances is the reader to construe endorsement by A4M of any specific companies or products. Quite to the contrary, Caveat Emptor. It is the reader's responsibility to investigate the product, the vendor, and the product information.

Dosing of nutraceuticals can be highly variable. Proper dosing is based on parameters including sex, age, and whether the patient is well or ill (and, if ill, whether it is a chronic or acute situation). Additionally, efficiency of absorption of a particular type of product and the quality of its individual ingredients are two major considerations for choosing appropriate specific agents for an individual's medical situation.

Furthermore, anyone with malignancy should consult their physician or oncologist prior to beginning, or continuing, any hormone therapy program.

Be mindful that just because a product is natural doesn't mean it's safe for everyone. A small portion of the general population may react adversely to components in nutraceuticals (especially herbal products). A complete inventory of interventions utilized by a patient should be maintained by physicians and health practitioners dispensing anti-aging medical care.

Views, opinions, and commentaries expressed by respective author(s) do not reflect the official policy or position of the A4M.

Anti-Aging Therapeutics, volume 17 is, again, designed for those with a health, medical, or biotechnological education or professional experience. It is not intended to provide medical advice, and is not to be used as a substitute for advice from a physician or health practitioner. If you are a consumer interested in any of the approaches discussed in these chapters, it is absolutely essential that you have a thorough discussion with your physician to understand all benefits and risks.

For those individuals interested in the diagnostics and/or therapies described by chapter authors of Anti-Aging Therapeutics, volume 17, A4M urges that you consult a knowledgeable physician or health practitioner, preferably one who has been Board Certified in Anti-Aging Medicine. You may find one by utilizing the Anti-Aging Directory at www.a4m.com.

President’s Message: A4M at the Helm of $295 Billion Marketplace – Achievements and Future Horizons

      Ronald Klatz, M.D., D.O.

President, American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M)

      INTRODUCTION

Historian Alan Kay remarked that: “The best way to predict the future is to invent it." The A4M demonstrates future-forward innovative thinking that has not merely withstood the tests of time and scrutiny, but has flourished and proliferated into a viable model now embraced around the world.

In 1991, a group of one dozen future-forward physicians convened to discuss the wide-ranging ramifications of rapidly emerging important discoveries towards identifying the mechanisms of deterioration and vulnerability to age-related diseases. As such, this group introduced a new definition of aging. In this new perspective, the frailties and physical and mental failures associated with normal aging are caused by physiological dysfunctions that, in many cases, can be altered by appropriate medical interventions. As an extension of this redefinition, this group proposed an innovative model for healthcare that focused on the application of advanced scientific and medical technologies for the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related dysfunction, disorders, and diseases. "Anti-aging medicine," and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), were born.

In the twenty-four years that have since followed, anti-aging medicine has achieved international recognition. Anti-aging medicine is now practiced by thousands of physicians in private medical offices, as well as at some of the most prestigious teaching hospitals around the world. Universally, those involved in healthcare, or those whose fields of expertise intersect with healthcare issues, support anti-aging medicine as a healthcare model promoting innovative science and research to prolong the healthy human lifespan. Public policy organizations and government agencies are now embracing anti-aging medicine as a viable solution to alleviate the mounting social, economic, and medical woes otherwise anticipated to arrive with the aging of nearly every nation on the planet.

      OVERVIEW

As it has remained for its entire existence, the A4M is a non-profit educational medical organization dedicated to the scientific premise that diseases and disabilities of human aging are largely preventable, treatable, and perhaps even reversible. The A4M is an international body of physicians, scientists, academicians, and government- and university-affiliated officials. A4M's membership numbers 26,000 hailing from over 120 nations worldwide. A4M’s accomplishments in advancing the acceptance, availability and accessibility of anti-aging medicine worldwide are summarized in Table 1.
