      Chapter One

      Hassan Clarke

One of the things I dreaded in life was getting locked up. I’d never been in a cell before, so you know I was mad as fuck that I got locked up. Destiny almost gave me a heart attack when she said the police wanted me. The first thing that came to mind was the shit that popped off with Corey. That was until the officer said I was charged with assault and battery. Instantly, I knew it was Imani. I was shocked that her ass would press charges against me—ungrateful-ass bitch. After all I did for her and her bastard child, this was how she repaid me.

I tried to talk to the officers, but they weren’t trying to hear me. Instead, they took me to Central Booking near Sherman and Sheridan Avenues. I went in front of the magistrate and was given a bond in the amount of twenty-five grand. I felt relieved because that was chump change. I was also booked and fingerprinted like one of these criminals out here.

The worst part was when one of the cell mates noticed me. Instead of him keeping his mouth shut, he walked closer.

“Ain’t you that attorney? Umm... I can’t remember the name.”

“Yes, that’s me,” I said as I hung my head in shame.

I knew it was only a matter of time before everybody and their mama knew I was locked up. I was ready to go. I didn’t want to spend another second in a jail cell. I patiently waited to get a bond. Even though Destiny and I were beefing, I was pretty sure that she’d make sure I got out of here soon.

I sat in the dingy-ass jail cell, waiting to hear my name called, but it never happened. Minutes turned into hours. It was damn near night again, and no one came to bail me out. I was transferred that evening to Rikers Island. I couldn’t believe this shit. I was a prominent member of the community, and here I was, getting treated like I was a common criminal.
