A Story about Loss and Grief in a School

      Sarah Helton

      Illustrated by Anna Novy

pii p1

      Hi, I’m Joe!

p2

I go to a great school.

Most children come to school in a minibus or a taxi.

p3 p4

Some of the children at my school can’t talk or walk, and some need equipment to help them.

We all know how to have fun, though.

There are lots of smiles and laughter at our school.

p5 p6

      Our classrooms are brilliant.

We have great things to play with and our lessons are really fun.

There are lots of adults who teach us and help to look after us.

All of the children in my class are

       my friends.

I have known them for a very long time.

p7 p8

Sometimes, some of the children at my school are unwell.

When they are ill, they might have to miss school and spend time at home.

p9 p10

Occasionally, some of my friends have to go to hospital so the doctors and nurses can help them get better.

We like to make cards for our friends who are in hospital.

The cards really help to cheer them up.

p11 p12

When they are better and come back to school, we have a great time saying hello and catching up on all the news.

p13 p14

Very, very rarely, someone is so unwell that the doctors and nurses are unable to make them better and they die.

p15 p16

Last year, my friend Lucy was very poorly.

We really missed seeing her at school.

One day, our teacher had to tell us some very sad news.

She told us that Lucy had been very, very unwell and that she had died.

p17 p18

      Everyone was sad.

We talked about Lucy a lot and what it means when someone dies.

When someone dies their body stops working and you won’t see them again.

They won’t come to school and you can’t go and visit them at their house.

p19 p20

Even though we won’t see Lucy again, we think about her often.

We look at photos of her and we talk about the things we did together.

I remember how much Lucy loved to get messy when we did painting.

And I remember the time she dressed up as a princess for our school play.

She looked lovely, and she giggled all through the play because her crown kept falling off!

p21 p22

When someone you know dies, you will probably feel sad.

Sharing how you are feeling with your family, friends and teachers really helps, though.
