      Dedication

For Rowan, who inspires me every day to work harder and do more.

      Preface

We live in a world that has its share of environmental problems, and we all want to be part of the solution. Perhaps you do your part to lead a green life by using LED lightbulbs in your home. You may recycle your daily newspaper. Perhaps you walk or bicycle to the office each workday. But what about green cleaning?

My personal reasons for going green are outlined in chapter 1. If you or other family members need additional convincing to switch to green cleaning, proceed to the appendix. It details many of the hazardous chemicals you probably have under your sink and provides an array of health reasons for getting rid of them. If you’re already convinced and just want to dive right in and get started, skip ahead to chapter 2 and begin cleaning!

Inside, you’ll find plenty of information on making your own cleaners using simple recipes. I encourage you to give it a try. It’s fun—and much easier than it sounds. You’ll also find advice about store-bought products that are safe and work well. (See the resource list at the back of the book for a complete list of companies that make eco-friendly products worth checking out.)

Part 2 of Green Clean starts with the two rooms you probably spend the most time cleaning: the bathroom and the kitchen. After that, we move to the laundry room, where I share some ecological washing strategies and provide green alternatives for getting rid of stains. Next, I take you around the rest of the house, sharing green-cleaning insights about floors, ceilings, and everything in between.

I tackle dirt where it lives in part 3. The final two chapters of the book cover all of the cleaning jobs that you might encounter outside the house. I show you how to green clean everything from the deck and driveway to the garage and grill.
