A cool breeze rustled through the open fields. Kites were flying high.

Hasmah’s eyes stayed glued to the one that she and her brothers had made with bamboo, rice paper, and strings coated in sticky rice and crushed glass.

With her heart in her throat, her eyes followed their layang-layang in the sky.

Clip! Glass strings cut one kite after another.

Swoosh! Hasmah watched as their kite came tumbling down. Time to go home to make another.

The fun would begin again soon!

When the wind was still, Hasmah and her brothers played rough and tumble games. One of their favourites was to catch

      labah-labah. Snap!

They trapped spiders in matchboxes, and watched as black spiders battled with one another. The biggest spider was always the winner.

Hasmah was an adventurous tomboy. Yet she loved reading and writing.

Being a doctor was far from her mind when she was young.

      When Hasmah was young,

she saw the Union Jack hoisted high. Her country, Malaya, was ruled by King George V of England.

Many people were poor and illiterate under British rule.

Education for girls was not a priority when Hasmah was born.

But her parents sent her to school. At school, she studied English, Science, and Maths. She loved reading the most. Being a doctor was far from her mind when she was at school.

image

When Hasmah was a teenager, the Second World War started. The Japanese invaded Malaya and Hasmah’s idyllic days ended.

image

During this time, Hasmah’s mother fell ill. Nobody knew what was wrong, not even the family doctor.

Hasmah’s heart squeezed as her mother suffered. She felt anxious because nobody knew what to do.
