В ходе третьего эксперимента (Leotti & Delgado, 2005) мы предлагали испытуемым, скажем, две подсказки – квадрат и круг. Квадрат обозначал выбор 50/50. Выбор правильного варианта сопровождался вознаграждением (проигрыш как таковой отсутствовал; испытуемый либо получал приз, либо не получал). Субъекты считали, что все „зависит“ от них – совсем как тот молодой человек, который надеялся „переиграть компьютер“. Второй тип раундов предполагал отсутствие выбора. Испытуемым показывали круг; в этом случае выбор делал компьютер. Если компьютер оказывался прав, испытуемые получали вознаграждение. Таким образом, получить вознаграждение можно было в обоих типах раундов. Единственное отличие – в первом случае выбор делали сами испытуемые, во втором – компьютер. Первый тип раундов требовал больше усилий (фактический выбор), хотя предусматривал аналогичное вознаграждение. Что интересно, испытуемые предпочитали именно его. Активность в полосатом теле возникала одновременно с предъявлением квадрата (но не круга). Иными словами, как только участники обнаруживали, что могут делать выбор самостоятельно, мы регистрировали активность в этой области мозга. Это свидетельствует о том, что сама возможность выбора может носить вознаграждающий характер».
