      Standard 3: Offering Opinions

      ELD Standard 3 Organized by Grade Level and Proficiency Level

      Emerging

       K Offer opinions and ideas in conversations using a small set of learned phrases (e.g., I think X), as well as open responses.

       1 Offer opinions and ideas in conversations using a small set of learned phrases (e.g., I think X), as well as open responses in order to gain and/or hold the floor.

       2 Offer opinions and negotiate with others in conversations using learned phrases (e.g., I think X.), as well as open responses, in order to gain and/or hold the floor.

      Expanding

       K Offer opinions in conversations using an expanded set of learned phrases (e.g., I think/don’t think X. I agree with X), as well as open responses, in order to gain and/or hold the floor.

       1 Offer opinions and negotiate with others in conversations using an expanded set of learned phrases (e.g., I think/don’t think X. I agree with X), as well as open responses in order to gain and/or hold the floor, elaborate on an idea, and so on.

       2 Offer opinions and negotiate with others in conversations using an expanded set of learned phrases (e.g., I agree with X, but X.), as well as open responses, in order to gain and/or hold the floor, provide counterarguments, and the like.

      Bridging

       K Offer opinions in conversations using an expanded set of learned phrases (e.g., I think/don’t think X. I agree with X, but . . .), as well as open responses, in order to gain and/or hold the floor or add information to an idea.

       1 Offer opinions and negotiate with others in conversations using an expanded set of learned phrases (e.g., I think/don’t think X. I agree with X), and open responses in order to gain and/or hold the floor, elaborate on an idea, provide different opinions, and so on.

       2 Offer opinions and negotiate with others in conversations using a variety of learned phrases (e.g., That’s a good idea, but X), as well as open responses, in order to gain and/or hold the floor, provide counterarguments, elaborate on an idea, and the like.

       K They also consider:Is my opinion or idea related to what the rest of the class is talking about?Do I know how to gain and/or hold the floor during this conversation so that I can speak?

       1 They also consider:Can I negotiate with others in conversations?Do I listen carefully to my classmates when they speak so I can stay on topic?Do I help the conversation grow bigger by adding my opinion?

       2 They also consider:Will my opinion offer a different argument to the conversation?

      Bridging

      Gist: Students offer their opinions and negotiate with others in conversations using an expanded set of learned phrases, as well as open responses, in order to gain or hold the floor, provide counterarguments, etc.

       K They also consider:Do I help the conversation grow bigger by adding my opinion or idea?

       1 They also consider:Do I ask questions when I’m confused?Will my opinion add something new to the conversation?

       2 They also consider:Will my opinion add something new to the conversation?

      Speaking and Listening Standards

       K SL.K.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion).Continue a conversation through multiple exchanges.

       K SL.K.6: Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

       1 SL.1.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).Build on others’ talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges.Ask questions to clear up any confusion about the topics and texts under discussion.

       1 SL.1.6: Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation. (See grade 1 Language standards 1 and 3 for specific expectations.)

       2 SL.2.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).Build on others’ talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others.Ask for clarification and further explanation as needed about the topics and texts under discussion.
