Remembering Valentine: A Novel. Erica JD Morrison
Beth snuck up behind her causing Katie to jump.
“Was that Andy?” Beth asked staring at the tall boy as he darted away.
“Yeah, we’re lab partners remember.”
“Not bad. He’s not slouching anymore. And unlike 99% of the school he can buy jeans that actually fit him. I hate the saggy butt thing it’s so gross!” Beth said.
“I agree, but come on its Andy, even with the new posture and the clothes he’s still the guy who put peanut butter in your hair in third grade.”
Beth laughed. “I think he was on to something, my hair felt really soft after.”
The girls laughed, “Andy the elementary school Vidal Sassoon.” Katie said. “Hey did you have a little package in your locker?”
“Nope and neither did anyone else on the dance committee.”
“How do you know did you ask them?”
“Duh! Yeah I asked them,”
“Did you tell them about my package?”
“Of course how else was I going to explain going up to people and asking them what was in their lockers, it was either explain myself or sound like a narc?”
“Thanks a lot Beth; the rumor mill is going to go crazy with this.”
“I doubt it.”
“Yeah? It’s a slow news day; this is going to be a nightmare.”
“Like I said you have nothing to worry about, there was a cat fight in the cafeteria, so your secret love is old news.”
“What?” Katie asked.
“Yep, Josie Gray and Mimi Smith, complete with throwing jello at each other. Mimi found out Josie was out with her boyfriend this weekend.”
“Really? How’d she find out?”
“Well they might have stopped in to the candy shop this weekend and bought some gummy bears, and I might have mentioned it to Sabrina Rice…” Sabrina Rice was the schools biggest gossip guaranteed to spread any rumor within ten minutes of hearing it, whether it was true or not.
“Beth you didn’t!”
“Hey relax; you have to admit no one is worrying about you are they.”
Katie shook her head, “You are a diabolical genius!”
“Yes I know, I’m also cute and clever and we are going to find out who gave you your little present, in the meantime break them open, I need sugar to fuel my diabolical genius.”
The girls took their usual route home, about a three block walk and finished all the conversation hearts on the way. Katie kept the gift box and card and they promised to meet early the next morning before school to get coffee before their first class. Both had gotten a bit addicted over the summer and were having a hard time facing their first period trig class without caffeine.
Beth had asked for a personal coffee maker for Christmas and been denied. Her mother had read on the internet that warned about early caffeine usage stunting your growth, at five foot six inches Beth felt she was pretty safe, but arguing with her Mom was a lost cause so the girls had altered their morning routine to include a quick trip to Starbucks.
That night Katie found it hard to fall asleep; she kept thinking of the little box of candy and wondering who it could be from. She finally drifted off thinking of her mystery man and slept soundly.
