and exchange to confirm any such matter: a man would take off his sandal and give it to the other person. This was the process of making a transaction binding in Israel. 8Then the redeemer said to Boaz, "Buy it for yourself," and he took off his sandal.

9Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, "Today you are witnesses that I've bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. 10And also Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, I've bought to be my wife, to preserve the dead man's name for his inheritance so that the name of the dead man might not be cut off from his brothers or from the gate of his hometown--today you are witnesses."

11Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, "We are witnesses. May the LORD grant that the woman who is coming into your household be like Rachel and like Leah, both of whom built up the house of Israel. May you be fertile in Ephrathah and may you preserve a name in Bethlehem. 12And may your household be like the household of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah--through the children that the LORD will give you from this young woman."

13So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife.

He was intimate with her, the LORD let her become pregnant, and she gave birth to a son. 14The women said to Naomi, "May the LORD be blessed, who today hasn't left you without a redeemer. May his name be proclaimed in Israel. 15He will restore your life and sustain you in your old age. Your daughter-in-law who loves you has given birth to him. She's better for you than seven sons."16Naomi took the child and held him to her breast, and she became his guardian. 17The neighborhood women gave him a name, saying, "A son has been born to Naomi." They called his name Obed.k He became Jesse's father and David's grandfather.

18These are the generations of Perez: Perez became the father of Hezron, 19Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab, 20Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 21Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed, 22Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.

1Samuel 1Now there was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphitea from the highlands of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah. He was from the tribe of Ephraim, and he was the son of Jeroham son of Elihu son of Tohu son of Zuph. 2Elkanah had two wives, one named Hannah and the other named Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah didn't.

3Every year this man would leave his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of heavenly forces in Shiloh, where Eli's two sons Hophni and Phinehas were the LORD's priests. 4Whenever he sacrificed, Elkanah would give parts of the sacrifice to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5But he would give only one part of it to Hannah, though he loved her, because the LORD had kept her from conceiving.b 6And because the LORD had kept Hannah from conceiving, her rival would make fun of her mercilessly, just to bother her. 7So that is what took place year after year. Whenever Hannah went to the Lord's house, Peninnah would make fun of her. Then she would cry and wouldn't eat anything.

8"Hannah, why are you crying?" her husband Elkanah would say to her. "Why won't you eat? Why are youc so sad? Aren't I worth more to you than ten sons?"

9One time, after eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah got up and presented herself before the LORD.d (Now Eli the priest was sitting in the chair by the doorpost of the LORD's temple.) 10Hannah was very upset and couldn't stop crying as she prayed to the LORD. 11Then she made this promise: "LORD of heavenly forces, just look at your servant's pain and remember me! Don't forget your servant! Give her a boy! Then I'll give him to the LORD for his entire life. No razor will ever touch his head."

12As she kept praying before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth. 13Now Hannah was praying in her heart; her lips were moving, but her voice was silent, so Eli thought she was drunk.

14"How long will you act like a drunk? Sober up!" Eli told her.

15"No sir!" Hannah replied. "I'm just a very sad woman. I haven't had any wine or beer but have been pouring out my heart to the LORD. 16Don't think your servant is some good-for-nothing woman. This whole time I've been praying out of my great worry and trouble!"

17Eli responded, "Then go in peace. And may the God of Israel give you what you've asked from him."

18"Please think well of me, your servant," Hannah said. Then the woman went on her way, ate some food, and wasn't sad any longer.e

19They got up early the next morning and worshipped the LORD. Then they went back home to Ramah. Elkanah had sex with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her. 20So in the course of time, Hannah conceived
