Silas straightened up. “Jillian? Seriously?” He ushered the lady from his lap. She smiled seductively and winked at him as she sauntered off.
“A very nice ‘thank you’ there, Baron.” Devin smiled wryly.
“Indeed.” Silas shook his head, laughing, and ran his fingers through his hair, trying to straighten the mess. He leaned over the table.
“Why do you want to know about Miss Johnsworth?”
Devin shook his head. “I don’t have the slightest idea. I just want to call on her.”
“Tonight?”
“Yes. Presently. Directly. Right damned now.” Devin banged a fist on the table, staring at his friend.
“You have it bad, Devin.”
“I don’t know what I have, exactly, but I must inquire. I have to, and I don’t know why.”
Silas patted his friend’s shoulder. “Fine. This is the last place I saw her and her father.”
Devin listened intently to the directions, shook Silas’s hand and left again.
