Hanging Basket

The method for making this hanging basket from diagonal half hitches is explained in detail with accompanying photos. Regardless of the type of knot, it takes time to become familiar with it. This project is made by repeating the same knot over and over, so once mastered, work should proceed smoothly. As it’s composed of three identical long sections, it’s also ideal for practicing diagonal half hitches.

The appeal of this hanging pocket for small pots is that as long as you can attach a hook to the wall, your plant can hang anywhere in the house. The top section is flat, allowing the beauty of macramé to be enjoyed as you would a tapestry. Take care when choosing the size of plant so that it doesn’t conceal the pattern. Make several to enjoy displaying them side by side.

Made from natural hemp twine, this hanging basket holds the plant pot snugly. The core is a metal ring from which square knots are worked to form linked oval patterns that taper towards the base. As the pot holder section is made from the linked oval patterns, the cords for hanging are kept simple. This natural-look hanging basket is delightful for decorating a terrace or sunroom as well as for hanging indoors.

The soft texture of the twine used to make this basket lends it a gentle air. As the twine is 7 mm wide, it has a bold presence and creates the look of a painted pattern on the pot it holds. As the twine is dyed by hand, there are variances of light and dark within the piece which enhance the natural feel and make it the perfect complement for greenery.

       Small Interior Design Items

Macramé can be used not only for decoration, but for practical items around the home.

There are all kinds of ways to enjoy macramé, from large items such as cushion covers to smaller ones such as trivets. Here, a cushion cover is simply a flat piece of macramé folded into two—all you need to do is place it over the cushion and use any excess cord at the sides to fix it in a few places. The cushion is visible through the cover, so using cord to complement the cushion color will give the finished item that little extra panache.

Tie the cord at the sides in a few places to fix the cushion in place.

Simple curtains can look a bit plain held open with ties in the same fabric, so why not try macramé curtain ties instead? Use thick cord to create items that are simple yet make a bold interior statement. Have fun incorporating wooden beads and so on in between knots to create variation.

Make this project longer, with fringing at both ends, and it becomes a belt. Worn with a plain dress or skirt, it makes a stylish accessory.

Braid one end and form a loop, and make the other end into a tassel. Pass the tassel through the loop to hold back the curtain.

Use a metal ring as the core from which to attach cords, then attach S hooks and chains to create a simple lampshade. The gentle light radiating through the knots is sure to ease fatigue at the end of a long day. Make sure to use an LED type light that does not emit heat.

Bottlework involves encasing a glass bottle in macramé. For this piece, a bottle slightly wider than usual has been selected in order to hold a scented candle, with relaxing effects from both the gentle light and the fragrance. Adapt the work to a different bottle size by changing the frequency of the motifs and the length of the fringe.
