“I’ll be okay. Thanks, though. I didn’t think you remembered any of that stuff.”
How could he forget? She was all he had thought about when he was locked into that hole in enemy camp.
His gaze touched hers and electricity fired through him when their eyes met. His growing erection tightened at what else he recalled about her body. “It’s no big deal.”
Her smiled faded too quickly as she disappeared up the stairs. “Okay.”
He silently cursed himself for hurting her.
No. It was important to put some emotional distance between them. He was sliding down that slippery slope of needing her more than air again. And he’d only disappoint her.
This time, he’d be selfless. He wouldn’t drag her into his crazy world only to destroy her. No matter what it cost him personally.
An hour slipped by before he looked at the clock again. He’d mapped their route and caught up on a few emails.
Checking on Julie was for work, he told himself as he walked upstairs and stood outside her door.
A muffled scream pumped a shot of adrenaline through him.
He burst into the room. “Julie?”
