       Acknowledgments

When I was an infant of two weeks I met King, my grandmother’s black Lab. King gave me my first doggie kisses and lessons in dog language. I dedicate this book to King, for being my first Labrador buddy.

My thanks to: Nana’s King, Mom’s Cinderella, and all Labs everywhere, for their optimism and affection; the hundreds of Lab owners whose questions helped frame this book; Nancy and Elizabeth Davis and “Lucy,” Anara Thomas and “Sunny”; Rebecca Fischer and “Alex”; and all the folks and Labs who helped.
