(often their teenage and twenty-something children earn wages), whereas the poorest households tend to have no workers—mostly because they are widows of advanced age or because they are unmarried females with young children and no husband present. For a very high percentage of the American poor, no one in the household is earning wages, or someone is working only part time for part of the year. Paying a living wage does not, then, solve the problem of poverty. At the lower end, most persons are not receiving any wage.
