Introduction
The life of Henry VIII (see plate 1) is probably the best defined of any king of England. Plays, films and television series have focused on Henry’s life, particularly in relation to his six wives. Put simply, he loved his first wife, Catherine of Aragon (see plate 4), but divorced her because she failed to give him a son and grew old and unattractive.
