Introduction
Inside this book there is a wealth of information for all cyclists looking to improve their times in, and enjoyment of, this great sport. I was inspired to motivate people to get the most out of their cycling experience and to pass on what I have learnt after years in the saddle and I hope this comes through in the following pages.
Most cyclists get stuck while trying to improve their performance because they don’t have access to the necessary knowledge. The Internet is an endless source of information on cycling-related issues but it’s often hard to piece it all together so that you have all the elements needed to become a better cyclist.
This book aims to be comprehensive, offering detailed facts and tips based on practical knowledge gained after many of years on the road. I have focused on keeping the topics straightforward without excessive ‘science talk’ but everything is built on a solid background and is thanks to hours and hours of research into cycling.
Cycling: serious about your sport offers you all the experience acquired throughout my professional cycling career and my time as a coach and provides you with the fundamentals for a better understanding of what is needed in this sport. Whether you are a novice, a more experienced racer, or simply a health freak trying to tone up your body, you will find this book focuses on the core skills you need to improve your cycling and will help you to keep on track with your personal targets.
The first section is dedicated to the basics of cycling because before you charge off onto the road it’s always important to have some elementary knowledge of the sport.
Next up is the real world of cycling techniques, set out in a clear, graphic way. Mastering certain skills and techniques is essential for all cyclists and these include the need for a smooth pedal stroke, drafting (or slipstreaming), climbing uphill, descending, cornering, plus essentials for cold and rainy weather and cycling in the wind.
A section that outlines the principal training skills that will give you a basis for planning your endurance-training workouts follows this.
No matter what your cycling goals might be, you will reap the benefits from these methods and drills.
The next section is dedicated to cross training, which is an indispensable part of a training programme for anyone who wants to get serious about their cycling.
Then there are all the facts you will need on nutrition, giving information on how to efficiently implement diet strategies.
Last but not least, there is a fully detailed description of a training programme for road cyclists, which unveils detailed professional knowledge on effectively implementing specific training methods and drills.
All this information provides a working base for you to enhance your performances if you remain committed to your cycling. We all have amazing athletic abilities and with the necessary dedication we can reach our potential.
Your dedication, together with the correct techniques and smart training tips outlined in this book, can combine to give you success in your cycling. I wish you reading pleasure, many joyful rides and wonderful achievements in this magnificent sport.
