Leashes and Lovers - What Your Dog Can Teach You About Love, Life, and Happiness. Sheryl Matthys
of it. They don’t complain or hold a grudge against someone who slighted them before or made them feel unwelcome. Rather, dogs approach situations with a fresh nose, eyes, and ears, – our version of having an open mind. Like the training approach of “drop it,” our dogs know how to let go of personal agendas to see the opportunities that await them.
I have a friend who really enjoys dating. Not necessarily the men so much, but the dating experience itself. As she told me, “Even if the guy’s not the ‘one,’ I always make sure to book the date at some restaurant I haven’t tried before, or someplace I really like, or have a destination date where I know it’s going to be fun. If the guy turns out to be a dud, at least I can enjoy myself being distracted by my surroundings, watching my meal prepared or a movie as the night goes on.” Now, that’s a positive outlook.
5. Dogs know when to walk away: Imagine meeting someone new and taking it slow, hanging back instead of rushing forward. Imagine “sniffing them out” rather than taking them at face value. Now, of course, I don’t mean that literally. But, yes, I do want you to relate to how your dog sniffs things out, and approach new relationships and encounters without letting the baggage of past experiences interfere with a fresh start. That does not mean you shouldn’t be careful, safe, and considerate about what you may be getting into. As dogs do, you should feel free to be choosy after you’ve sniffed it out, and walk away if need be. Some situations aren’t worth walking into at all. Your dog certainly wouldn’t enter into an environment or relationship that she sensed wasn’t right. Listen to your gut, too. Your dog has a defensive mechanism of fight, flight or avoid, and would rather do the latter than fight. Knowing what to avoid and when to flee or get out of a damaging relationship is just as important for you. These are the lessons your dog can teach you, so learn the cues and actually try them out in the real world.
As dogs do, you should feel free to be choosey after you’ve sniffed things out, and walk away if need be.
