THEATRE ROYAL STRATFORD EAST
(London season producing partner)
This famous producing theatre, located in one of the most resolutely urban and vibrant parts of London, prides itself in reflecting the concerns, hopes and dreams of East Enders old and new. Theatre Royal Stratford East both inspires and is inspired by its young and multi-cultural community in a continuous loop that draws and engages with audiences like no other UK theatre can.
This tradition goes back to the 1950s when internationally renowned theatre director Joan Littlewood championed white working-class audiences, providing a stage for their stories and voices through pioneering new work. Later, as the local community evolved, with people immigrating to East London from the Caribbean, Africa and South Asia, Theatre Royal Stratford East championed putting their lives and creativity on stage under the leadership of Philip Hedley. Now, with Kerry Michael at the helm, Theatre Royal Stratford East continues to be passionate about developing new talent. New performers, writers, directors and other artists who have historically been ignored are encouraged to break the mould of contemporary theatre and particularly musicals. The theatre’s work has been recognized in recent years with several prestigious Olivier Award wins and nominations. In 2009 Kerry launched Open Stage – a landmark initiative giving audiences the power to programme the theatre’s stage in the first six months of 2012 – the first of which is the 2007 Olivier-nominated Cinderella which returns in December 2011. Theatre Royal Stratford East’s aim of artistic excellence that gives voice to stories rarely heard, means ultimately it is driven by its remarkably diverse and loyal audience. This has been the secret of the Theatre’s success for over 50 years. 100,000 people visit Theatre Royal Stratford East every year; and a vibrant bar and restaurant offers free entertainment, seven days a week.
