observed under the microscope and being then archived.

      Section Three

      1. Histology of the Nervous System

      Cerebral Cortex

HEx400. Image of the cortex where is observed the presence of some pyramidal cells, as shown by the arrow (largest) with their eosinophilic cytoplasm and where is seen a small extension corresponding to an axon. Other small pyramidal cells and the presence of small capillaries (1) in the supporting tissue or glial with nuclei of oligodendrocytes are observed.

HEX40. Peripheral cortex, in which is observed on the outside of, the meningeal surface in its parietal side (external) (1), or called dura mater with a lining of monolayer cells. In the intermediate space are observed numerous dilated blood vessels or arachnoid (2) and a slight membrane only noticeable at this magnification or pia mater (3). Underlying, the brain parenchyma.

HE x100. An approach in a area of the cortex at the peripheral level which can be seen on the outside of, the meningeal surface (upper) in its parietal side (external) (1) or dura mater with a lining of monolayer cells. In the intermediate (2) space are observed some dilated blood vessels or arachnoid and a slight membrane only noticeable at this magnification or pia mater. Underlying, the brain parenchyma (3) where cell features of the first layers of the cortex can be seen.

      HE x400.

Another detail of the image of the cortex where are observed the presence of some pyramidal cells (1) with eosinophilic cytoplasm and where is seen a small extension corresponding to an axon in all of them.

Presence of small capillaries (2) in the supporting tissue or glial with small and highly basophilic nuclei of oligodendrocytes.

      HE x400.

Presence of a dilated capillary (1) in the supporting tissue or glial with numerous, small and highly basophilic nuclei of oligodendrocytes.

HE x400. Another detail of the image of the cortex where is observed the presence of some pyramidal cells (1) with its eosinophilic cytoplasm.

Smaller pyramidal cells and the presence of small capillaries and some extravasation of erythrocytes (2) (very common in necropsy) can be seen in the supporting tissue or glial with nuclei of oligodendrocytes.

HE x400. Periventricular area (IV ventricle).

Detail of ependymal cells (1) with its cuboidal lining and with nuclei centrally located and basophilic aspect. The cytoplasm is finely granulated. Within the ependymal lining numerous small capillaries are observed (2).
