The Cork Chronicles. Paige Hartwick
and turned on her GPS. It was an older model so it took a couple of minutes to calculate. It had been raining during her drive and it was starting to get dark out. She had probable another fifteen minutes or so until it got dark and she had always had a hard time driving in the dark because she would get disoriented.
When the GPS finished calculating, Kyra put in Josh’s address just to see how far off she was. The directions popped right up and Kyra’s stomach twisted. She was thirty miles in the wrong direction, in the middle of nowhere… How did she not realize she was going the wrong direction?
Kyra texted Josh back and told him that she was just going to spend the night at a hotel and would update him in the morning. Kyra took a deep breath and turned her car back around. She had plenty of time to get back to the familiarity of town before dark, but she still didn’t want to drive too fast.
She had only driven about fifty feet when she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. She turned her head, looking out the passenger window. She didn’t even have time to react when she heard the sound of grinding metal…
CHAPTER EIGHT
The sound of grinding metal was so loud that all Kyra’s brain could figure out was that she was upside down. The other vehicle had hit her with so much force that her car had flipped upside down into the ditch on the other side of the road. Her vision was foggy, as was her brain. Her body was starting to go into shock, so she couldn’t feel the pain from her broken bones or the cold wind that was whipping around her. She could smell blood and lots of it, but she couldn’t tell where it was coming from. The sound of crunching glass made Kyra look up. Someone was standing next to her.
There was a sudden, white-hot pain as the person bent down and cut her seat belt. They dragged her out of the wreckage and laid her down on the side of the road, then walked away. She tried calling for help, but the shock and pain had drained all of her energy. The other person came back and started tending to her injuries, which cause Kyra to scream when they were stabilizing her broken leg. The pain was so intense that Kyra immediately lost consciousness.
